Traveling in the US and Canada August/September 2015

California was a great start for my travels in the US. When I was heading up north I expected the weather to become colder. In fact, the coldest place along the west coast was San Francisco. From there I went to Portland by Greyhound. It was two hours delayed and very uncomfortable. I really missed South America’s buses. The delay might be around an hour as well but they are by far more comfortable than Greyhound.

I stayed three days in Portland, Oregon. I went hiking in the beautiful forests. After one hike I went to a bar for a cool beer and a snack. There I met a very nice Nigerian gentleman. We had a nice chat and he told me that he is working at Intel. He invited me to come to the local Intel Campus in Hillsboro. Very interesting for me to see people working in an office after seven months of fun and adventure. Thanks for that to Akeem Abodunrin!

Traveling in the USA is not like traveling in South America. You have to book your Hostel in advance… sometimes weeks. As I never know what day I will stay at what place weeks before I never stayed at any hostel in the US. Luckily there is Airbnb and Couchsurfing. I stayed more often at Airbnb places. Usually, they cost around 30 to 40 US and are definitely cheaper than Hotels or Motels.

I took the Amtrack train from Portland to Seattle. Not because it is the fastest nor the cheapest way to go to Seattle. But because I wanted to experience an American train trip.

 Amtrack Platform

It was really hilarious!!! First, it was one hour late. Then we had to line up. What’s that for? Just let the people on the platform so they can enter the train all at once. No way on Amtrack. There was a line and they did not let the people on the platform until the train was fully stopped. Then we had to show our ticket to the guy in the beginning of the platform. He told us which car to go to. At the car, there was another employee who made sure we go upstairs for our seat number. In the train, it was actually very comfortable and the landscapes we passed were stunning.

In fact, how they operate made me understand why this train is not the fastest nor the cheapest way to travel from Portland to Seattle.

First, I rent a car to explore a bit of the countryside of the US before I came back to discover the city. I booked the cheapest car available on Seattle’s car rental market. It was a Dodge Charger.

charger

How can that be the cheapest car? I booked it for five days and it was around $200. Well, I had fun with the powerful engine and people thought I am the police as they often use this kind of car. I went to Coeur D’Alene. The way was first through a mountain chain and after through dry farmland.

I liked the experience of not seeing buildings. In Coeur D’Alene I booked an Airbnb place. There were only the other Airbnb guests at the house but not the actual host when I arrived but I already knew that because the host sent me a message before so I still felt very welcome. The town is relaxing, the lake is beautiful, people are mostly republican, friendly and a bit of introvert. Just start talk to them and they will speak up.

Back in Seattle, I stayed at a Couchsurfing place. I hang around the harbor and made a trip to deception pass and one day I also went to the Museum of Flight… why not? I think it’s one of my first actual museums on this trip. Except on some, I went to in Santiago de Chile. The Museum of Flight in Seattle is very nice to get to know the history of aviation. I can totally recommend it. You need a few hours to see everything as it is really big by the way.

Next destination was Vancouver BC. Great City with nice architecture and friendly people!

The weather was not so good but I still had some sunny days left in the late summer. I also made a trip to Vancouver Island.

  1. Nice blog 🙂 So amazed you made it all the way to my little corner of the world, Whidbey Island! I never thought foreigners ever visited the place I grew up, looks like I was wrong. Also slightly hilarious to hear about your train experience, mine was pretty much the same. Arrived late and super slow. 😛
