Cumbuco January/February 2015

Very close to Fortaleza you can find Cumbuco. There is a bus at Beira Mar in Fortaleza or another one I don’t know exactly where… but you will find it 😉. Just ask the people “onde tem omnibus para cumbuco?” and don’t think it is enough to ask just one person. The reason is Brazilian people often give you wrong advice because they don’t honestly know it but somehow they think it’s impolite to not help you. So they just try their best which could be wrong. To be sure it’s always good to get a second opinion. Even about the location of a bus station.

First of all, I went to Cumbuco to learn Kitesurfing. The most important thing when learning something is to have a proper teacher. So don’t think you will get a proper one for the bad money. Although there are a lot of cheap offers at the beach from 50 R$. With this, you will learn nothing. Even worse you might get used to doing it inappropriately, later on, you have to grudgingly break off from these erroneous teachings.

Still, 100 R$ is way cheaper than in Europe and for this money, I found a very good teacher. You can find him at Kite house in the beginning of the town. Ask for Paolo.

I went for the first days to the Bada Hostel. This is a real valuable place to stay. You have a great breakfast, a pool, clean infrastructure and a nice bar to make some Caipirinha yourself. The only thing which is not quite working very well is the WiFi. So it is close to impossible to upload pictures and so on…

That’s why I changed the place and went to a Hotel (Pousada) which is called Vila Coqueiros. What a nice big bed :-)… On the other hand, I caught a cold from the air condition… stupid boy. But yes the WiFi was definitely way better than in the Hostel.

About restaurants, there are plenty of good places in Cumbuco. The best restaurant I visited is called Muda. They make really great dishes but it cost a bit more than other restaurants.

Another option is to go to some place where local people eat. You get traditional food like meat, rice, and beans. This is really great food and costs like 6-8 R$.

It is also nice to go to a grill station and eat a chicken. Divided by 3-4 people also a good investment. Don’t eat directly at the beach. Most of the restaurants there serve the same food but 4 times higher than the usual price. Like the ones in town. However, I had a very nice Coco Verde filled with camarão (shrimps) at the beach…

If you like a lot of mozzarella on your Pizza you can also go to the Pizza place… but don’t even think that you can eat one Pizza alone.

The supermarkets provide you with a lot of vegetables and fruits. But if you want meat you often have to ask for… then they give you deep frozen meat. It’s actually better than the way it looks. And I think it is a good solution to have a deep frozen meat instead of buying it outside where it is 30° C. There is also a very nice snack when it is too hot to eat something warm is “Açai”. Feel free to google it’s really delicious and provides you with a lot of energy.

Cumbuco is only a 40 minutes bisride from the busstop at the beachstrip of Iracema beach Fortaleza.
